Great Bittern (Botaurus stellaris)

The Great Bittern is a large and impressive wetland bird, measuring up to 80 cm in length with a wingspan of 125–135 cm. It weighs around 900–1100 g and can live up to 11 years.
It inhabits freshwater or brackish marshes with extensive reed beds, where it finds both shelter and food. Its diet consists mainly of fish, but also includes insects, amphibians, worms, small mammals, and birds.
One of the most distinctive features of the Great Bittern is its deep, booming call, which can be heard up to three kilometres away. The male produces this remarkable sound in spring to attract females and defend its territory.
The species is extremely well camouflaged: when threatened, it stretches its neck upward and remains motionless, blending perfectly with the surrounding reeds. In Cyprus and Greece it is a rare or migratory species, usually seen during winter or migration periods. Its presence indicates a healthy and well-balanced wetland ecosystem.

Ο Ήταυρος είναι ένα μεγάλο και εντυπωσιακό πουλί των υγροτόπων, με μήκος που φτάνει τα 80 εκατοστά και άνοιγμα φτερών 125–135 εκατοστά. Ζυγίζει περίπου 900–1100 γραμμάρια και μπορεί να ζήσει έως και 11 χρόνια.
Ζει σε γλυκό ή υφάλμυρο νερό, σε περιοχές με εκτεταμένα καλάμια και πυκνή βλάστηση, όπου βρίσκει προστασία και τροφή. Τρέφεται κυρίως με ψάρια, αλλά και με έντομα, αμφίβια, σκουλήκια, μικρά θηλαστικά και πουλιά.
Ένα από τα πιο χαρακτηριστικά γνωρίσματα του Ήταυρου είναι το βαθύ, βροντερό κάλεσμά του, που θυμίζει μακρινό μουγκρητό και μπορεί να ακουστεί σε απόσταση έως και τριών χιλιομέτρων. Το αρσενικό χρησιμοποιεί αυτόν τον ήχο την άνοιξη για να προσελκύσει θηλυκά και να υπερασπιστεί την επικράτειά του.
Ο Ήταυρος είναι εξαιρετικά καμουφλαρισμένος: όταν αισθανθεί κίνδυνο, τεντώνει τον λαιμό του προς τα πάνω και μένει ακίνητος, μιμούμενος τα καλάμια μέσα στα οποία ζει. Στην Κύπρο και την Ελλάδα θεωρείται σπάνιο ή μεταναστευτικό είδος, που εμφανίζεται κυρίως τον χειμώνα ή κατά τη μετανάστευση. Η παρουσία του αποτελεί ένδειξη υγιούς και ισορροπημένου υγροτοπικού οικοσυστήματος.
